British Film Institute (BFI) has announced some of the specifications for their Blu-ray release of The Leopard, available on Blu-ray on June 21.
The Leopard (Il gattopardo) from 1963, perhaps Director Luchino Visconti's best work, stars Burt Lancaster as Prince Don Fabrizio Salina, a noble aristocrat of impeccable integrity, who tries to preserve his family and class amid the tumultuous social upheavals of 1860's Sicily. Other notable actors include Alain Delon as the Prince's opportunistic nephew Tancredi and Claudia Cardinale as the beautiful Angelica.
The movie is based on the acclaimed novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, published posthumously in 1958 and subsequently translated into almost every European language.
The Leopard comes to Blu-ray presented in its complete and uncut length and in the original 2.20:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The high definition transfer was made from the original 35mm negative and the process was overseen by the film's Director of Photography Giuseppe Rotunno. It also features fully restored sound and comes with an Italian PCM mono audio track.
