In April announced the Blu-ray Disc Association two new Blu-ray discs one of these, called BDXL, has been approved as a standard. The disc consists of four layers with the capacity of 128 GB, which is 27 times more than a standard DVD. There will also be a 100 GB version with three re-writable layers. However, the disc cannot be used by the private sector, yet. Because there is not a Blu-ray player that supports the new standard. The disc is primarily for companies with the need of a media with large capacity.
The disc will perfect for the use of 3D, because an 3D image takes up more space than an image in 2D, but it will be a few years before the BDXL can be used for that purpose.
